About The Position

Anticipated openings for the 2026-2027 School Year. The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach, we ensure full access to American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic, extracurricular, and student life programs. In partnership with families and communities, we empower students to think critically and develop a sense of self and belonging. We are currently accepting applications to create a pool of qualified individuals who can work on an as needed basis to provide direct nursing care to students on any given day. MSD, Frederick, Campus, 101 Clarke Place, Frederick, MD 21705. A Registered Nurse is the full performance level of work providing direct nursing care to students at the Maryland School for the Deaf. This is a 10-month school year, on-call substitute position.

Requirements

  • Current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 or possess a current multi-state license in party states that candidates have declared as primary states of residence.
  • Possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.
  • Provide the facility with a phone number at which they can be reached.
  • Successfully complete substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  • Successfully complete a criminal background investigation at their own expense.
  • Provide three letters of recommendation.

Nice To Haves

  • Pediatric, school, or camp nurse experience desirable.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn American Sign Language (ASL).

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications (via oral, topical, inhalation, and injection) as prescribed for medical conditions or injuries.
  • Assess, evaluate, and monitor students' current medical and emotional health status and identify nursing needs of students.
  • Maintain accurate and adequate records of nursing care and observations and treatment according to established procedures.
  • Maintain student health center facility.
  • Provide auxiliary duties as needed.
  • On-call nurse substitutes must be available on an on-call basis.
