About The Position

Kokua Education is hiring substitute teachers for K-12 schools in the Rio Grande Valley area, including La Joya, Texas, for the 2026–27 school year. Substitute teachers set their own schedules and may work up to five days per week in assignments they are excited about. They cover lesson plans, serve as positive role models, and help students see what is possible. Assignments may also include lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season. Kokua offers support daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The role can provide a path toward permanent positions at high-performing K-12 schools.

Pay is up to $145 per day, paid weekly. Rates are up to $117 per day for substitutes with a high school diploma or GED, 48 or more college credits, or an associate degree, and up to $145 per day for those with a bachelor's, master's, or professional degree. Employment is paid via W-2. Background-check costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.

Requirements

• At least one year of experience working with children in any setting, such as a classroom, tutoring, or coaching.
• At least 48 college credit hours completed.
• Confidence managing a classroom of students.
• Willingness to step in where needed, including supervision, tutoring, and testing proctoring.
• Pass state and federal background checks; costs are reimbursed after 10 assignments.
• Believe that every child has a unique and powerful gift to share with the world.

Responsibilities

• Cover lesson plans in K-12 classrooms as a substitute teacher.
• Manage classrooms and support students' learning.
• Perform additional duties where needed, including lunch and recess supervision, hallway monitoring, tutoring, and proctoring during testing season.
