About The Position

This posting is for potential hiring as a Paraprofessional substitute, specifically connected to the Early Childhood Education department. Candidates selected will be hired as Para substitutes with the intent to cover Pre K IA vacancies when needed. Eligibility to cover other IA vacancies will also be in place. The Special Education Assistant Substitute assists in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in regular or self-contained classrooms. This role involves assisting in implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time, providing information to school personnel, and attending IEP meetings as requested. Job duties vary based on school/program needs, including generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, and autism specializations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an associate degree, OR completion of two years of college (72 quarter hours or 48 semester hours of college credit), OR a passing score on the Praxis Parapro Assessment Test.
  • One (1) year of related paid or volunteer work experience.
  • Valid State of Washington Driver's License.
  • Secure Training CPR/First Aid.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Background Clearance.
  • Ability to perform basic math, including calculations with fractions, percents, and/or ratios.
  • Ability to read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and present information to others.
  • Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate student activities.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials for special education students to ensure participation.
  • Administers materials and assignments (e.g., tests, homework, grades papers, folders) to assist in evaluating student progress and organizing student needs.
  • Administers first aid and medical assistance as required.
  • Assists students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
  • Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to meet needs, ensure safety, and provide a consistent environment.
  • Instructs students in academic subjects, social skills, and daily living skills in individual and group settings to reinforce instructional objectives and implement remediation plans.
  • Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g., adapting materials, checking papers, attendance, setting up projects).
  • Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to aid students and ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Willingness to substitute at schools throughout the District and in all types of classrooms.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
