About The Position

We are seeking multiple Dormitory Counselor 2 (DC 2) Substitutes for the Girls and Boys Dormitory. This role is a part of the Residential Program, for the Oregon School for the Deaf. These positions are On-Call (substitute), Academic year, represented by the SEIU. The working shift for this position will vary and works only when students are present. Substitute positions are paid on an hourly basis. OSD provides direct 24-hour educational and residential services to approximately 130 students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, kindergarten through age 21. The programs and departments at OSD include: Administration, Clerical, Classroom, Residential, Nutrition Services, Athletics, Educational Support Services, Maintenance/Custodial, and Student Health Services. OSD also acts as a resource to the entire state, providing special activities, consultation, and educational services to students, professionals, families, and the public. The residential program, in conjunction with the school program, provides the care and instruction that help lead the students to acquire independent living skills.

Requirements

  • An Associates degree in a behavioral or social science field; OR Eighteen months experience in the skills listed below:
  • Communicating on a one-to-one basis or in groups to provide or exchange information.
  • Composing written communications such as reports, letters, and memos.
  • Organizing time and adapting work to unforeseen needs.
  • Assessing, identifying, and meeting the care, treatment, and/or training needs of disabled individuals.
  • Applying behavior modification, exercise, living skills, or other training programs in working with disabled individuals.
  • Participating with others in the development of training programs for the disabled.
  • American Sign Language at the PI level 3.
  • Some positions may be restricted to same sex as the student.
  • Some positions may require the ability to obtain certification in basic first aid and pass the agency pupil-transportation vehicle, class-10 examination.
  • First Aid/CPR Training will be provided annually prior to the start of the school year, if you are unable to attend then you are responsible for finding certification training.
  • MANDT Training.
  • Applicants will be subject to a finger-print based criminal history check including driving record.
  • Applicants will be subject to a Controlled Substance Test (drug screening), which must be successfully completed before the first day of employment.
  • Work shifts include evening/swing hours.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions as they occur, as a part of student supervision on and off campus.
  • At times may deal with an aggressive student or hostile parent.
  • Occasionally need to initiate behavior management techniques at various stages of student escalation.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Requires ability to obtain a Red Cross card.
  • Requires driving license to provide student transportation in state vehicles.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience (paid or unpaid) working with children ages 5-18 in a residential setting.
  • Basic behavior intervention strategies experience.
  • Ability to support students through typical school social conflicts and emotional dysregulation.
  • Housekeeping and cooking experience, practical computer skills, housekeeping, cooking, & athletic experience, preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Providing residential students with in-sight supervision, living skills instruction, PBIS instruction, recreational and leisure time activities, and a living environment, which is safe, clean, and visually attractive.
  • Planning and supervising large and small groups of students for activities such as instructional play, homework or other educational activity, organized leisure time and after school recreation activities.
  • Keeping attendance and continuously knowing the location, safety and wellbeing of each student under your care.
  • Supervising and/or participating in assisting with sports activities and other extracurricular activities.
