About The Position

We are seeking a Dormitory Counselor (DC 1) in the Girls and Boys Dormitory, which is a part of the Residential Program, for the Oregon School for the Deaf. This position is a full-time Academic year, classified position represented by the SEIU. Our Residential Program is responsible for maintaining the educational mission of Oregon School for the Deaf and is designed to provide a variety of learning opportunities that promote students' academic endeavors, and which encourage their growth and development. We recognize that learning is not solely academic in nature. A large part of learning inevitably takes place outside the classroom. We are committed to supporting that learning through the residential experiences we provide. Our dorm counselors are committed to providing students with a safe, comfortable and well-maintained living space in an academically enriching environment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Six (6) months experience working with children or adults in a group home, foster care setting, or skilled care center.
  • American Sign Language at the PI level 3 or better (Gallaudet) or Intermediate or better (WOU) within 6 months of hire.
  • First Aid/CPR Training will be provided annually prior to the start of the school year, if you are unable to attend then you are responsible for finding certification training.
  • MANDT Training.

Nice To Haves

  • Microsoft Word, Google suite, and practical computer skills.
  • Housekeeping or custodial experience.
  • Basic behavior intervention strategies experience.
  • Experience in childcare in K-12 Educational settings.
  • Knowledge or experience in Child care development, or child care.

Responsibilities

  • Providing residential students with in-sight supervision, living skills instruction, PBIS instruction, recreational and leisure time activities, and a living environment, which is safe, clean, and visually attractive.
  • Planning and supervising large and small groups of students for activities such as instructional play, homework or other educational activity, organized leisure time and after school recreation activities.
  • Keeping attendance and continuously knowing the location, safety and wellbeing of each student under your care.
  • Supervising and/or participating in assisting with sports activities and other extracurricular activities.
