Engineer classification is multi-level, based on the qualification guidelines outlined in the Company’s Engineer Career Path, Administrative Policy 2.13. A minimum classification of an Engineer I or Engineering Technologist I is required in this position. Engineering Technologist classification is multi-level, based on the qualification guidelines outlines in the Company’s Engineering Technologist Career Path POSITION CONCEPT Provides engineering and operations support for substation Structures and Equipment (S&E) functions for major capital projects managed by the ECPM team. This position is responsible for both performing engineering work directly and offering engineering oversight to contractors performing engineering tasks on behalf of Tampa Electric. Ensures that all engineering deliverables meet TEC standards, coordinates with contractors to clarify requirements, and verifies the quality and compliance of contractor work.

Requirements

  • Engineer I - Minimum 18 months of experience or 12 months experience with an FE
  • Engineering Technologist I – Minimum 3.5 years experience (3 with FE)
  • Engineer II – Minimum 4 years of experience
  • Engineering Technologist II – Minimum 6 years of experience
  • Senior Engineer – Minimum 8 years of experience and eligibility to become a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.
  • Senior Engineering Technologist – Minimum of 10 years of experience
  • Principle Engineer – Minimum 12 years and must be a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Eligible to obtain an FE in the State of Florida and must obtain within the first 2 years of employment
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in power system engineering and operations.
  • Must have sound knowledge of physical substation design, including equipment specifications, site layouts & foundation designs, ground grid design, and permitting processes.

  • The ability to manage individual researcher or staff specialist responsibilities and to conduct, coordinate, and supervise complex engineering studies and reports.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering and operations support for substation Structures and Equipment (S&E) functions for major capital projects managed by the ECPM team.
  • Responsible for both performing engineering work directly and offering engineering oversight to contractors performing engineering tasks on behalf of Tampa Electric.
  • Ensures that all engineering deliverables meet TEC standards, coordinates with contractors to clarify requirements, and verifies the quality and compliance of contractor work.
  • Provides engineering, estimating, programming, and mapping input for projects from various sources including TEC energy delivery system expansion, governmental agencies, developers, and private entities.
  • Reviews contractor work to ensure it meets TEC standards and providing clarification or direction as needed.
  • Develop structures and equipment cost estimates.
  • Select substation sites and obtain governmental and environmental permits.
  • Design substation foundations and structure layouts, specify and apply the electrical equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, bus/cables, and instrument transformers.
  • Develop work requests and construction prints.
  • Develop and maintain substation equipment specifications in accordance with the latest industry standards and current operating policies.
  • Represent and coordinate Substation Engineering projects within Electric Delivery’s Project Management process, acting as a liaison between internal teams and contractors.
  • Oversee the progress and technical quality of contractor work to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Evaluate and select materials, providing expertise in the procurement process.
  • Collaborate with contractors on material selection, monitor equipment delivery, ensure proper project accounting, and verify the accuracy of manufacturers’ drawings.
  • Provide engineering support to operating departments during field activities including field data collection, construction, and closeout.
  • Interpret engineering designs during construction, facilitate communication between internal teams and contractors, and gather feedback for future design improvements.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for contractor engineering teams.
  • May provide guidance, training, and consultation as a relay engineering specialist to other P&C engineers and to contractor engineering teams on substation relaying schemes and calculations.
