Substance Abuse Counselor

About The Position

The Substance Abuse Counselor provides direct care to patients experiencing mental, emotional, and substance abuse issues. Working with the treatment team, the counselor supports the interdisciplinary treatment process for patients with a dual diagnosis. The role includes developing and conducting substance abuse education and treatment activities, providing individual and group counseling, assessing patients, and developing and implementing Recovery Plans in accordance with company standards. This position is available only to people who reside in the United States.

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a social services-related field, or certification in the substance abuse field, or experience in the substance abuse field.
Ability to work with computers and software used by the department.
Relevant experience providing addiction counseling services.
Certified as a Counselor in Training under supervision, or licensed in social work, counseling, or psychology.
Ability to obtain and maintain CPR certification.

Nice To Haves

Licensure or certification in an addiction counseling specialty, such as Certified Addiction Counselor, Registered Addiction Counselor, or Certified Addiction Professional (CAP); this is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

Conduct group and individual substance abuse activities for patients and develop related programs.
Assess and evaluate patients for co-occurring disorders and determine the level of care required.
Complete all necessary records and reports in a timely manner.
Maintain professional development through in-service education and other resources, while complying with Human Resources requirements.
Provide culturally sensitive care, treating each patient as an individual and considering their cultural background in care and treatment.
