Subject Matter Expert (SME) & Lead Developer

Radiance Technologies•Huntsville, AL

About The Position

Radiance Technologies is seeking a highly experienced hands-on technical lead to design, develop, prototype, and integrate missile subsystems. The role spans mechanical hardware, real-time embedded software, computer engineering architectures, Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) algorithms, and Control Actuation Systems (CAS). The position serves as the primary hands-on technical architect and lead developer, translating program requirements into flight code, integrated actuator mechanisms, low-latency bus architectures, and HWIL testbeds. The Program Chief Engineer provides direction and retains final airworthiness and system sign-off authority. The role leads multidisciplinary development and trade studies; CAS engineering and integration; GNC algorithm development and flight-code generation; embedded software and computer architecture; and HWIL/PIL testing and root-cause analysis. It also supports proving-ground and flight-range activities, including pre-flight checkouts, telemetry decoding, and post-flight anomaly investigations.

Requirements

  • B.S. with 25+ years, M.S. with 15+ years, or Ph.D. with 10+ years of hands-on experience in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • Demonstrated experience as a lead technical developer or primary architect on at least one guided weapon, missile, or interceptor program from initial code/cad through flight test.
  • Practical expertise in missile mechanical structures, aerothermal heating considerations, structural dynamics, and electromechanical actuator/CAS integration.
  • Advanced capability in control theory, 6-DOF modeling, trajectory design, and guidance implementation.
  • Advanced proficiency in C/C++, Python, and MATLAB/Simulink, including automated flight-code generation via Embedded Coder.
  • Hands-on RTOS development experience with VxWorks, Linux PREEMPT_RT, or Green Hills INTEGRITY.
  • Embedded bus integration experience with MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, Ethernet/UDP, PCIe, CAN, SPI, or RS-422.
  • Must possess an active US DoW Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD-882 system-safety practices or DO-178C software-development practices.
  • Experience interfacing directly with Chief Engineers, IPT Leads, and DoW customer technical teams during PDR/CDR design reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Lead hands-on development across mechanical structures, embedded software, onboard computer architectures, GNC algorithms, and CAS subsystems.
  • Formulate, model, and conduct multidisciplinary trade studies addressing mechanical mass and inertia, aerothermal loading, computational throughput, and control-loop latency.
  • Draft system and subsystem technical specifications, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and qualification plans for Chief Engineer review and approval.
  • Lead engineering, dynamic modeling, and laboratory integration of high-speed electromechanical, hydraulic, or cold-gas-thruster Control Actuation Systems.
  • Analyze fin and nozzle dynamic response, thermal limits, gearbox compliance, and motor-drive performance under high-G and aerodynamic-load conditions.
  • Troubleshoot physical, electrical, and hydraulic failure modes, structural resonances, nonlinearities, and mechanical compliance issues.
  • Develop, simulate, and implement GNC algorithms, autopilot loops, Kalman filters, and trajectory optimization routines.
  • Translate 6-DOF flight-dynamics models into deterministic real-time C/C++ code for onboard flight processors.
  • Evaluate missile maneuvering performance, dynamic stability, and guidance accuracy across subsonic through hypersonic regimes.
  • Architect low-level embedded software frameworks for flight computers and FPGA, DSP, or SoC processing units and real-time communication buses.
  • Implement optimized C/C++ code and manage RTOS task prioritization, memory allocation, multicore synchronization, and interrupt service routines.
  • Conduct hardware/software co-design to ensure interface timing among flight computers, IMUs, seekers, and CAS drive electronics.
  • Design, build, and maintain HWIL and PIL simulation setups to test flight software with physical actuators and hardware under test.
  • Implement VV&A procedures for simulation tools and testbeds.
  • Deploy to remote proving grounds and flight-test ranges for pre-flight checkouts, real-time telemetry decoding, and post-flight anomaly root-cause analysis in support of the Chief Engineer.
