About The Position

The University of Southern California (USC) is seeking a Student Services Advisor II to join its Athletics department. This role involves providing comprehensive academic support and guidance to student-athletes, primarily within the Football and Men’s Volleyball programs. The position is crucial for promoting academic achievement, personal development, and overall student-athlete success through individualized advising and collaboration with campus partners. The advisor will counsel students on academic matters, monitor progress, ensure NCAA eligibility, and liaise with various university offices. This specialist position may also involve leading other advisors or performing highly specialized activities requiring an advanced degree. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree, combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.
  • 3+ years of relatable experience required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Student Information Systems.
  • Experience working in higher education and/or a sports related field ideally.
  • Directly related experience in student services and programming with ability to lead.
  • Thorough knowledge of NCAA Bylaw 14 and academic eligibility requirements.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in transcript analysis, eligibility certification, and academic advising.
  • Experience with Academic Performance Program metrics.
  • Ability to analyze and project Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) outcomes.
  • A master's degree and at least three years of professional experience working directly with student-athletes in an academic setting are required.
  • Proactive in identifying potential academic challenges, developing effective solutions, and managing multiple priorities while consistently meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, solutions-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-driven environment.

Nice To Haves

  • An understanding of the unique culture and academic needs of college student-athletes is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education, preferably within a Power Five athletics program, is strongly preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the unique culture, demands, and academic support needs of collegiate student-athletes while maintaining a commitment to their growth and success both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Masters or Doctorate Degree.
  • 3+ years of relatable experience working with revenue generating student-athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic counseling for undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Advises on matters of curriculum, course and degree requirements, transfer credit evaluation, and graduation counseling and clearance.
  • Monitors student progress in honors and probation programs.
  • Applies NCAA eligibility guidelines to transcript analysis for continuing students and prospective transfer students.
  • Evaluates student problems, academic, administrative or personal, and refers student to appropriate student services office for additional counseling.
  • Liaises with other offices on behalf of students to facilitate problem resolution.
  • Maintains academic unit student records and coordinates registration activities, grading, degree progress, enrollment and degree verification, and transcripts with the USC Office of Academic Records and Registrar.
  • Assists with Petition applications, resumes and letters of recommendation.
  • Interfaces with faculty, administrators and students regarding grading policies, academic progress and student promotability.
  • Recommends and executes intervention strategies for student caseload based on NCAA eligibility guidelines, student academic profiles, and student athletic time demands.
  • Communicates weekly with athletic department staff and coaches regarding student-athlete well-being, academic performance, and NCAA academic eligibility.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to other student services advisors who perform similar work.
  • Sets priorities and timelines and monitors delivery of student services.
  • Assists in resolving non-routine problems and provides policy or procedural interpretations for matters which are not clearly defined.
  • Performs highly specialized activities which require an advanced degree combined with directly related experience as a minimum requirement.
  • Counsels or advises prospective students and families on one or more key areas such as admissions, financial aid, housing and academic requirements.
  • Intervenes with university central student services as necessary to connect prospective students with the right staff member or department in order to facilitate the application process.
  • Provides initial evaluation of admissions and/or financial aid applications.
  • Participates in committees at the department, school, college or university level which deal in student services issues.
  • Provides administrative support for local committees and works on committee-assigned projects.
  • Maintains currency on policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to admissions, financial aid, registration, transfer credit evaluation, course and degree requirements, graduation requirements, petitions and other student services.
  • Coordinates NCAA academic eligibility certification with Athletic Compliance and Degree Progress and contributes to NCAA Academic Performance Program annual data submission.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
