About The Position

UPMC’s Student Nurse Internship (SNI) program is a temporary, paid, 10-week summer opportunity for nursing students to put their education into practice while working alongside a trained preceptor. The 2027 program runs May 17 through July 23. Interns gain exposure to outpatient oncology, inpatient oncology, radiation oncology, and specialty areas of oncologic patient care, with assignments spanning inpatient and outpatient settings. Interns follow their preceptor’s schedule and may work up to 40 hours per week; scheduling accommodations may be available for school obligations. The oncology fellowship offers experience across the cancer care continuum, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and supportive care. Interns engage with multidisciplinary oncology teams and observe collaborative, patient-centered care across outpatient, inpatient, infusion, radiation oncology, and supportive care settings. They also complete an evidence-based practice research project related to oncology and present it at the program’s graduation ceremony. The program includes supplementary educational sessions, mentorship and networking with UPMC nursing leadership, shadowing in at least one additional nursing area at the hospital placement, and the opportunity to apply for system-wide UPMC Graduate Nurse opportunities before completing the program. Locations considered for this posting include UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Shadyside and select network locations, and UPMC Shadyside Hospital. Applicants must submit a resume, nursing transcripts, an essay explaining their interest in oncology nursing and why they should be selected, and two letters of recommendation, including at least one from a faculty member. Transcripts must be non-editable official or unofficial documents that include the university and student name. Attendance is required at SNI Program Orientation, scheduled May 17–21 depending on the hospital, and the End of Summer Event on Friday, July 23. Applicants must have active American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS certification throughout the summer and bring current AHA CPR certification to orientation. Additional clearances may be required depending on location and specialty.
