About The Position

As a nursing student, you have the opportunity to gain experience in an acute care inpatient clinical setting while working under the direction of a registered nurse. This program is designed for current registered nursing students interested in providing hygiene/comfort measures, selected direct and indirect patient care activities, and ancillary duties for patients. This position is available year-round across the Cecil, Wilmington, and Newark campuses.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED required or International Education Evaluation from a ChristianaCare approved vendor.
  • Current enrollment in an accredited registered nursing program which prepares the candidate to sit for the NCLEX-RN.
  • One completed “in-person/ hands-on” clinical rotation by the start of the program.
  • Availability to attend the mandatory classroom training portion.
  • Current BLS required.
  • Resume must include current and/or completed clinical rotations.
  • Cover Letter should explain your motivation for becoming a nurse and express your interest in working for ChristianaCare.
  • Transcripts (Unofficial) required.

Nice To Haves

  • GPA of 3.0 or higher (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge vital to deliver care appropriate to a diverse patient population, including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to acquire information to identify patient needs, and to provide the appropriate care needed.
  • Perform crucial unit-specific tasks such as communicating to patients, families, employees, and physicians using both verbal and written communication skills.
  • Respond to patient needs with promptness, initiate interventions within scope of responsibility, and collaborate with the RN.
  • Perform assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.
  • Report to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients, and visitors.
  • Possess knowledge of nursing care provided for the specific patient population of the unit, as well as knowledge of department and unit standards, policies, and selected procedures.
  • Ability to perform specific unit tasks as assigned by the RN, and recognize changes in patient status and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and apply required technical skills as outlined in procedures for patients and to follow universal precautions.
  • Exercise judgment, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Work as a Patient Care Technician.
  • Maintain employment throughout the year.
  • Work a minimum of 16 hours biweekly (externs may work more than the minimum).
  • Work one weekend shift within a four-week schedule.
  • Fulfill a holiday requirement, including one winter holiday and one summer holiday.
