About The Position

The Student Nurse Extern I (SNE 1) paid program provides nursing students with practical work experiences to facilitate their transition into the role of a registered nurse. Learning and nursing engagement occur on a 24-hour-per-unit basis in acute care, critical care, emergency care, psychiatry, and surgical/outpatient areas. Externs gain hands-on experience in patient care, teamwork, critical thinking, communication, and professional development. The role works under the direction, delegation, and supervision of a registered nurse.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Third-year student or higher in a School of Professional Nursing.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with the patient care team.
• Perform direct patient care under the direction, delegation, and supervision of a registered nurse.
• Document patient care provided.
• Monitor and record patient condition and communicate it to the supervising registered nurse as appropriate.
• Maintain positive professional relationships with patients and families, coworkers, and the health care team.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
• Collaborate across disciplines as needed to coordinate patient care, including transfers, discharge, referrals, and spiritual or psychosocial support needs.
• Evaluate the learning needs of patients and/or families and provide education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
• Advocate for patients' physical and emotional well-being.
• Support the performance improvement philosophy.
