Student Nurse Extern
About The Position
The Student Nurse Extern is an adjunct to the patient care team and provides direct patient care under the general supervision of a registered nurse. The extern performs tasks at the level of clinical skills successfully completed and passed in a local college nursing program, with skills expanded as appropriate under established protocols. All newly hired externs initially function as nursing assistants, regardless of their clinical level in the nursing program. Once cleared by the Supervisor, they may move to the skill level appropriate to their training. The role offers students real-world experience while pursuing a nursing program.
Requirements
- Successfully completed the first semester of a nursing program.
- Must be in good academic standing.
- Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and maintain it.
Nice To Haves
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, feeding, toileting, and ambulating.
- Measure and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
- Support nurses during procedures by preparing supplies, positioning patients, or providing comfort care.
- Interact with patients and families to provide reassurance and relay information to the care team.
- Observe and learn clinical skills, nursing judgment, and hospital workflows under the guidance of a preceptor.
- Provide direct patient care under the general supervision of an RN and in accordance with established protocols and demonstrated clinical skills.
