About The Position

The Student Nurse Extern (SNE 1) Program provides nursing students with practical work experiences to facilitate their transition into the role of a registered nurse. Throughout the paid program, learning and nursing engagement occurs on a 24hr per unit basis in a broad range of acute care, critical care, emergency care, psychiatry, women’s & children, surgical/outpatient areas. SNEs gain hands-on experience in: Patient Care. Teamwork, Critical Thinking, Communication Skills and Professional Development.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• School of Professional Nursing 3rd year student or higher
• Basic Life Support (BLS) American Heart Association required

Responsibilities

• Works collaboratively with the patient care team.
• Performs direct patient care under the direction, delegation and supervision of a registered nurse.
• Documents patient care given.
• Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to supervising RN.
• Maintains positive professional relationship with patient/ families, coworkers, and health care team.
• Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
• Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
• Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
• Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.
• Supports performance improvement philosophy.
