About The Position

The Student Radiology Technologist is responsible for screening, positioning, and imaging of patients. The Student Radiology Technologist will be scheduled to work only when another Radiology Technologist is on-duty and will work closely with the Radiology Team Leader and Radiologist to produce the most diagnostic images possible in accordance with the department protocols. This role involves providing quality patient care by considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. The extern will also demonstrate clear clinical skills appropriate to the age of the patient and perform a variety of support functions.

Requirements

  • Completion of the first year of an accredited Radiologic Technologist program.
  • Currently enrolled in the second year Radiologic Technologist program.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Upon successful completion of the Radiologic Technology program, Student Radiology Technologist has 6 months to pass the ARRT (R) certification.
  • Incumbents may only remain active in this role for 18 months.

Responsibilities

  • Screening, positioning, and imaging of patients.
  • Working closely with the Radiology Team Leader and Radiologist to produce diagnostic images.
  • Adhering to department protocols.
  • Maintaining good rapport and cooperative relationships.
  • Approaching conflict in a constructive manner.
  • Identifying problems, offering solutions, and participating in their resolution.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of patient, physician, employee, and visitor information.
  • Discussing patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriate places.
  • Maintaining knowledge to perform job duties.
  • Performing job duties in the safest possible manner.
  • Reporting all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
  • Screening patients prior to exams for safety-related issues (e.g., verifying correct patient, appropriate clinical history, correct order).
  • Using two patient identifiers for all exams.
  • Following appropriate procedure protocols according to radiologist specifications.
  • Performing exams utilizing proper technique and views for the patient's condition and requested exam.
  • Completing patient-related documentation in accordance with department and hospital policy.
  • Reviewing and completing studies in PACS according to modality and workflow specifications.
  • Participating in student education and meeting program requirements.
  • Demonstrating self-directed learning.

  • Demonstrating unit/area competencies.

  • Demonstrating clear clinical skills appropriate to the age of the patient.
  • Reviewing patient schedules to identify potential problems or incorrect orders.
  • Maintaining department supplies by notifying appropriate personnel when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Attending training related to daily job functions (e.g., RadNet, PACS).
  • Treating all patients, families, co-workers, and visitors in a caring and respectful manner, being mindful of individual differences, and cultural and ethnic diversity.
