About The Position

This part-time Radiology Extern position supports imaging technologists with patient preparation and examination room management. The role involves maintaining a clean and stocked environment, verifying patient identification, explaining procedures, and assisting with patient transfers. The extern will also utilize radiology computer systems for requisitions and patient information, review medical records, and ensure accurate documentation in various systems. A key aspect of the role is positioning patients and selecting exposure factors under direct supervision, adhering to radiation safety practices. The extern must demonstrate age-specific competency in patient care and possess strong communication and patient care skills.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Radiologic Technology.
IL hires must be students from an accredited radiology program and in 2nd year of clinical training.
Completion of a minimum of 12 months training in an accredited program in Radiology.
Anticipated completion, as verified by program director, from a Radiography program that is accredited by a mechanism acceptable to the ARRT.
Successful completion and documentation of clinical competencies and associated academic course work in the following areas: Chest, Abdomen, Spine and Pelvis, Head, Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity, Thorax, IVP, and Fluoroscopy procedures.
GI Procedures to include Upper GI, Small Bowel, Lower GI, and Gall Bladder.
Successful completion and documentation of academic course work in the following areas of study: Patient Care and Basic Radiation Safety and Protection.
Must possess good communication and patient care skills.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), and Registered Technologist (RT) registration issued by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) needs to be obtained within 120 days of graduation of accredited Radiology Tech program.

Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Supports imaging technologists with preparation of patient and examination room prior to, during, and following imaging procedures in accordance with established infection control practices.
Organizes and prepares exam rooms and work areas, including cleaning, stocking, and maintaining equipment.
Verifies patient identification using two identifiers and communicates with patients to explain procedures, obtain clinical history, confirm acknowledgment of patients' understanding and address any questions about the imaging procedure.
Assists patient in preparation for exam and transferring patients to and from exam rooms.
Independently transports patients to other areas of the facility as required.
Uses the radiology computer systems to generate requisitions, check schedules, and obtain pertinent patient information.
Reviews patients medical record to obtain necessary clinical information including patient history, lab results, and physician orders, obtains necessary clinical information from patients, and compares requisitions to physicians' orders to ensure exam accuracy.
Positions patients and selects exposure factors for various radiologic examinations following accepted radiation protection and safety practices under the direct supervision of a licensed radiographer.
Ensures that images and other patient records are accurately documented, following approved workflows, in SmartChart, RIS and PACS in a timely manner.
