About The Position

The Service Leadership Work Study Program (SLWS) is a community engagement program that provides students with an on-campus employment opportunity where they work with local community organizations. By working closely with local community organizations, students in the program get a sustained opportunity to engage with local issues while also interacting with a broad range of community members. The program also provides a peer learning community that supplements the work done by the students at their various work-sites and that provides opportunities for shared learning and collaboration. The positions in the program, which fall under the Student Union contract and pay the standard campus wage, can also fulfill federal work-study requirements. This position, which is for 4-6 hours per week, will support The Iowa Kitchen. The Iowa Kitchen, which is an off-campus initiative of the Relish restaurant, is an effort to provide fresh, healthy food to community members in need through weekly meals, plus cooking training for high school and college students. All the meals are served on Saturdays between 11:30 am and 1 pm. Laura and Kamal, who run the Iowa Kitchen, are looking for two student assistants who will help with prepping and serving meals + help coordinate other volunteers. The students in the position can expect to work 4-6 hours a week. This is an especially great position for any student interested in learning their way around a professional kitchen!

Requirements

Desire to learn how to cook/eat healthy, with inexpensive ingredients.
Desire to serve the community.
Ability to negotiate stairs to take meals out to recipients. (Some accommodations may be available for other work duties.)
Make a time commitment of 4-6/hours per week, and fulfill consistently.
Be respectful of others: co-workers as well as people we serve.
Cover, label, & put away ingredients, as well as prepped or left-over food.
Follow sanitary practices as trained to do.
Before leaving, clean spaces & utensils used.
Communicate extenuating circumstances in a timely fashion.

Responsibilities

Help with meal prep.
Help recruit, organize/coordinate cohorts of shorter-term volunteers.
Arrange (w/Kamal’s schedule) for volunteers to prep the week’s meals.
If Kamal/Laura are unavailable to do so, come in early enough on a Saturday to heat food.
Oversee clean-up of Saturday operations if Kamal/Laura are unavailable.
