The Service Leadership Work Study Program (SLWS) is a community engagement program that provides students with an on-campus employment opportunity where they work with local community organizations. By working closely with local community organizations, students in the program get a sustained opportunity to engage with local issues while also interacting with a broad range of community members. The program also provides a peer learning community that supplements the work done by the students at their various work-sites and that provides opportunities for shared learning and collaboration. The positions in the program, which fall under the Student Union contract and pay the standard campus wage, can also fulfill federal work-study requirements. This position, which is for 6-8 hours per week, will support the Grinnell Community Meal. The Grinnell Community Meal is a weekly sit-down meal for community members that provides a space for community building, while also combatting food insecurity in Grinnell. The meal is hosted by Grinnell United Methodist Church on Thursday evenings in partnership with the CLS. One of the things that makes the meal distinctive is that from week to week we have different community groups, including a number of student groups, help prepare and serve the meal. We are looking for 2 students to work with the meal to help with planning meals, doing outreach, coordinating the meal on Thursdays, doing shopping, and more. The students who work for the meal can expect to work 6-8 hours per week and will need to be available on Thursday from 4-6:30 pm to help with preparation for the meal. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the community and meet community members from a range of backgrounds. Students in the position will also get to work with other student groups to help them get involved with the community meal. And they will help with the recently established Grinnell Community Fridge, which is outside of Drake Library.
