About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Mentoring & Student Development and working with the Lead Coordinator and Advisor of Coyote Experience, the Student Assistant Peer Advisor assist with peer level academic advising and support to students majoring in programs within the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration (JHBC). Peer Advisors assist students understand major and general education requirements, build class schedules, navigate university systems and academic processes, and connect with college-specific academic, career, and engagement opportunities. They also support students through outreach and referrals designed to promote academic success, belonging, and continued progress toward graduation.

Requirements

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Admission or registration as a CSU student.
  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
  • Eligible to work in the United States

  • Ability to learn and accurately explain advising information, university processes, and available resources.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow directions, work cooperatively, and ask for assistance when a question is outside the peer-advisor role.
  • Commitment to providing welcoming, respectful, and student-centered support to students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Sophomore standing or higher with a declared undergraduate major in JHBC.
  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Familiarity with PAWS, myCAP, registration, academic advising, and CSUSB campus resources.
  • Experience in mentoring, student leadership, customer service, outreach, orientation, tutoring, or another peer-support role.
  • Comfort speaking with students individually and in small or large groups.
  • Availability to work during weekday business hours and participate in occasional campus events.

Responsibilities

  • Assist professional staff in meeting with JHBC students, through drop-in advising, and during scheduled programs or events.
  • Assist students understand major requirements, general education requirements, course sequencing, and class-schedule options using approved advising resources.
  • Assist students with navigating and understanding PAWS, myCAP, class search, registration tools, and other student systems.
  • Explain common academic policies and procedures within the scope of training and refer complex questions to a professional academic advisor or appropriate campus office.
  • Connect students with JHBC academic departments, faculty, student organizations, internships, career resources, workshops, and other college specific opportunities.
  • Provide information and referrals to ASUA, JHBC, and other campus or community resources that support student success and wellbeing.
  • Participate in outreach calls, emails, and other approved communication with students to encourage registration, academic planning, use of campus resources, and timely completion of important tasks.
  • Assist professional staff in providing advising related presentations, workshops, orientation activities, and Coyote Experience events.
  • Maintain accurate and timely notes or records of student contacts and referrals in approved systems.
  • Participate in required training, team meetings, and regular supervision with the Director, Lead Coordinator, JHBCBPA student success team, and other ASUA staff.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and follow FERPA, university policies, and ASUA procedures.
  • Perform other related student-support and general office duties as assigned.
