About The Position

Under the general direction of the Director of Academic Advising, the Student Success Coordinator provides advanced-level student services and serves as the campus subject matter expert on academic success, retention, persistence, and graduation initiatives. The position exercises a high degree of independent judgment in developing, implementing, evaluating, and continuously improving campus-wide academic success programs, policies, and advising practices that directly support institutional student success goals. The incumbent independently analyzes institutional and student success data to identify trends, evaluate program effectiveness, and recommend policy, procedural, and programmatic improvements that influence advising practice and student success outcomes across the university. The position develops collaborative strategies with academic colleges and administrative units to improve student retention, academic standing, and degree completion. The position provides highly complex academic advising to students experiencing academic difficulty while simultaneously leading university-wide initiatives related to probation, dismissal, academic recovery, orientation, and advising services. Through strategic leadership, data-informed decision making, and cross-divisional collaboration, the incumbent contributes to institutional priorities related to student persistence, equity, and graduation.

Requirements

Equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job‑related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.
Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.
Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas; plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations; analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served; and establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.

Must reside in the State of California.
Must be lawfully authorized to work in the United States.
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.
The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.

Responsibilities

Advises students who are having serious academic difficulties
Helps students on academic notice, probation, dismissal, or returning after dismissal
Reviews student records and individual situations
Explains and applies university academic policies
Creates academic recovery and success plans for students
Refers students to appropriate campus resources and support services
Helps develop programs that improve student success and retention
Reviews advising programs to see what is working and what needs improvement
Leads academic probation and dismissal processes
Handles complex academic standing cases
Makes sure procedures follow CSU and university policies
Reviews student data related to: Retention Graduation Academic standing Student progress
Uses data to recommend improvements to programs and procedures
Prepares reports and shares findings with leadership
Serves as a campus expert on academic success, probation, dismissal, and recovery
Provides guidance to faculty, staff, administrators, and advisors
Supports academic advising and registration during new student orientation
Helps first-year, transfer, and other student groups with registration and advising
Develops advising and registration processes
Resolves difficult registration and advising issues
Works with campus departments to improve the student experience
Collaborates with Admissions, Registrar, Orientation, Enrollment Management, and academic colleges
Participates in university committees and student success initiatives
Builds partnerships with campus departments
Helps remove barriers that may prevent students from succeeding or graduating
Performs other related duties as assigned
