About The Position

C3 Wellbeing, a recipient of the PBN Best Places to Work in Rhode Island award for 2022, 2023, and 2024, has a 30+ year history of providing school-based mental health promotion, substance use prevention, education, early intervention, case management, and referral services to middle and high school youth in Rhode Island. We are currently serving 75 schools in 32 districts. The Student Assistance Counselor will provide prevention, early identification, assessment, intervention, and referral services for substance misuse and mental health problems within a school setting. This role involves conducting group services for youth with substance use issues, children of parents with substance use disorder, and other vulnerable youth, as well as leading school-wide awareness and outreach activities for students and families.

Requirements

Master’s degree in a behavioral health specialty: Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology.
A minimum of 1-2 years of supervised counseling experience with teens.
Knowledge of adolescent and child development.
Knowledge of alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other drugs.
Ability to engage adolescents in individual, group, and classroom sessions.
Professional verbal, written, and presentation skills.
Ability to exercise sound professional judgment.
Computer competence using the Internet, Word, and Excel.
Ability to learn electronic data collection systems required by funding sources.

Responsibilities

Conduct the Prevention Education Series: A 4-topic classroom-based program on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs to help students identify and resist substance use pressures, correct misperceptions about substance use prevalence and acceptability, and understand the consequences of substance use.
Problem Identification/Brief Intervention: Conduct time-limited individual and group sessions.
School-Wide Awareness Activities: Conduct monthly activities with student participation to increase the perception of harm from substance use, positively change social norms, and increase enforcement of and compliance with school policies and community laws.
Parent/Community Programs: Conduct informational meetings and parent education sessions, providing resources specifically for parents on substance use and mental health issues.
Referral and Follow-Up: Refer students and parents requiring more intensive counseling, treatment, or other services to appropriate community agencies or practitioners.
Learn the priorities, policies, and procedures of Project SUCCESS, C3 Wellbeing, and the assigned school.
Introduce and develop Project Success in the assigned school setting as described in the Project SUCCESS Program Manual and 3-day training.
Generate referrals of target groups through visibility at school events, student activities, classroom presentations, faculty and parent presentations, and other required activities.
Provide substance use training and consultation to school staff on referral processes for the Student Assistance Program and identification of students under the influence of alcohol/drugs.
Conduct a comprehensive psychosocial assessment, including substance use, on every referred student.
Hold meetings with key administrative, faculty, and pupil personnel staff on substance use-related issues.
Make necessary contact with parents via telephone and after-school sessions.
Provide thorough substance abuse screening and assessment on all referred students.
Provide intervention services to substance-using students and their families.
Provide a range of prevention and early intervention services to children of substance-abusing caregivers.
Keep up-to-date on relevant community substance abuse and mental health resources.
Make appropriate contact, via telephone, to facilitate referrals to community substance abuse agencies and private practitioners.
Initiate and participate in substance abuse prevention activities for the school and community.
Handle substance use-related crises.
Keep up-to-date on all required reports and data entry.
Maintain confidentiality as specified in state and federal guidelines.
Attend all supervisory and training sessions.
