About The Position

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan dedicated to expanding opportunities through education, career, and supportive services. The community school program aligns with this mission by providing high-quality programs and services within community centers and school partnerships. Reporting to the Community School Director, the Student Advisor is responsible for providing support in college and career readiness, academic progress monitoring, day-to-day student issues, and social-emotional and personal development. Student Advisors will follow the Primary Person Model, serving as the first point of contact for students, parents, and staff, and collaborating with partner school faculty and staff to ensure student academic success.

Requirements

  • B.A/B.S.W. with at least two years’ experience with youth-related work.
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with school-aged youth, educators, families, and communities from a wide range of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
  • Experience working in school-based settings (Middle, and/or High School).
  • Knowledge about tenants of community organizing, student support services, and youth development theories.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, with strong relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in WordPerfect/ Microsoft Word and other applications.
  • Self-motivated and eager to create a positive difference in the lives of students.
  • Strong communication skills and dedication to working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team and support staff.
  • Excellent organization, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Sufficient technology skills, including the ability to learn new software and programs, complete digital paperwork requirements, communicate effectively via email, and a willingness to learn new skills/complete basic troubleshooting.
  • Must be clear to work at ESH. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary person advisor for an assigned cohort of students.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one sessions with students at least twice a month.
  • Support students in creating SMART goals and working towards their implementation.
  • Partner with students, families, school, and Community School teams to develop individualized plans.
  • Conduct and support student advisory groups in collaboration with school faculty.
  • Provide updates on student progress to leadership and key school staff.
  • Participate in weekly case conferencing with school and CS staff.
  • Provide crisis intervention and counseling for students as needed, under supervision.
  • Document all student interactions on assigned data systems.
  • Provide attendance outreach through phone calls, texts, letters, remotely, and/or home visits.
  • Organize and implement special activities/events to meet the recreational, cultural, and social needs of the school community.
  • Support the new student admission process, including outreach, open houses, intake interviews, and orientations.
  • Partner with students to identify opportunities and referrals based on their needs and aspirations.
  • Create best practices for cohort management and support services in collaboration with the Program Director.
  • Assist students in defining career interests for exploration through internships, job shadowing, and other activities.
  • Partner with ESH Workforce Development and College Access Counselor and Internship Coordinator for postsecondary planning.
  • Educate students about colleges, the college admissions process, FAFSA, trends, procedures, and testing.
  • Track students’ academic progress using report cards, progress reports, and other school resources.
  • Help students identify strengths and challenges to develop SMART goals and take advantage of growth opportunities.
  • Support students in developing employability skills (Resume Building, Cover letter writing, Mock Interviews, job/internship applications, job shadowing) through individual and group activities.
  • Build strong relationships with families to provide support, resources, and opportunities for growth.
  • Work to implement family structures with the school, including parent workshops, volunteer opportunities, and connections to community resources.
  • Work with families needing additional supports on an individual basis, accessing ESH’s internal Social Services Department.
  • Collaborate in the successful management of the program with the Program Director, NYCDOE Staff, and the school community.
  • Lead and/or champion school events to build community, pride, and a welcoming environment.
  • Prepare and present workshops for student development in leadership, life skills, and self-efficacy.
  • Collaborate with leadership to design tools and strategies for tracking and meeting program goals.
  • Strategize with the team for program improvement.
  • Attend and participate in school/community-based meetings, administrative meetings, and professional development trainings.
  • Complete tasks and/or projects assigned by the Program Director.
