About The Position

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan that believes education is key to creating opportunities. The community school program aligns with this mission by providing high-quality programs and services within school partnerships. The Student Advisor, reporting to the Community School Director, is responsible for providing support in college and career readiness, academic progress monitoring, day-to-day student issues, and social-emotional and personal development. Student Advisors will follow the Primary Person Model, serving as the first point of contact for students, parents, and staff, and will collaborate with partner school faculty and staff to ensure student academic success.

Requirements

  • B.A/B.S.W. with at least two years’ experience with youth-related work.
  • Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with school-aged youth, educators, families, and communities from a wide range of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
  • Experience working in school-based settings (Middle, and/or High School).
  • Knowledge about tenants of community organizing, student support services, and youth development theories.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, with strong relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in WordPerfect/ Microsoft Word and other applications.
  • Sufficient technology skills, including the ability to learn new software and programs, complete digital paperwork requirements, communicate effectively via email, and a willingness to learn new skills/complete basic troubleshooting skills.
  • Must be clear to work at ESH, contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
  • Experience in community organizing.
  • Knowledge of student support services.
  • Understanding of youth development theories.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary person advisor for an assigned cohort of students.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one sessions with students (at least twice a month).
  • Support students in creating SMART goals and working towards their implementation.
  • Partner with students, families, school, and Community School teams to develop individualized plans.
  • Conduct and support student advisory groups in collaboration with school faculty.
  • Provide updates on student progress to leadership and key school staff.
  • Participate in weekly case conferencing with school and CS staff.
  • Provide crisis intervention and counseling for students as needed (under supervision).
  • Document all student interactions on assigned data systems.
  • Provide attendance outreach through phone calls, texts, letters, remotely, and/or home visits.
  • Organize and implement special activities/events for the school community.
  • Support the new student admission process (outreach, open houses, intake interviews, orientations).
  • Partner with students to identify opportunities and referrals based on their needs and aspirations.
  • Create best practices for cohort management and support services in collaboration with the Program Director.
  • Assist students in defining career interests for exploration through internships and job shadowing.
  • Partner with ESH Workforce Development and College Access Counselor for postsecondary planning.
  • Educate students about colleges, the admissions process, FAFSA, trends, procedures, and testing.
  • Track students’ academic progress using report cards, progress reports, and other school resources.
  • Help students identify strengths and challenges to develop SMART goals.
  • Support students in developing employability skills (Resume Building, Cover letter writing, Mock Interviews, etc.).
  • Build strong relationships with families to provide support, resources, and opportunities.
  • Implement family structures with the school, including parent workshops and volunteer opportunities.
  • Connect families to community resources and ESH’s internal Social Services Department.
  • Collaborate in program management with the Program Director, NYCDOE Staff, and the school community.
  • Lead and/or champion school events.
  • Prepare and present workshops for student development.
  • Collaborate with leadership to design tools and strategies for tracking program goals.
  • Strategize with the team for program improvement.
  • Attend and participate in various meetings, including professional development trainings.
  • Complete tasks and/or projects assigned by the Program Director.
