About The Position

As a Structural Welder on SpaceX’s ground support equipment team at Massey’s Test Site, you will fabricate and repair the robust stands and structures supporting Starship launches and tests. Working on a night-shift crew in a high-energy environment, your precise welding will help enable reusable rocketry and rapid innovation. The position involves constructing and repairing site structural stands and other test-site structures, interpreting engineering drawings and specifications under lead welder supervision, and producing high-quality work safely and on schedule. The role requires adaptability in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities, and may involve related duties that support an efficient work environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience in one or more of SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, or gas-shielded FCAW (FCAW-G); experience from a college or vocational welding program qualifies.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Availability for overtime and weekends, with flexibility because the schedule varies based on site operational needs.
  • Ability to safely work at heights up to 500 feet, in confined spaces, and while operating heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job, including standing, sitting, walking, reaching overhead, climbing, kneeling or crouching, twisting the upper body, and pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying within the stated limits.
  • Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees for six hours or more per day.
  • Typically exposed to extreme outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, and rain, and to fumes, odors, and noise.
  • Must meet applicable U.S. export-control eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years of experience in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, oxy-acetylene cutting, fitting, and arc gouging.
  • Strong knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, AWS and ASME codes, and engineering principles for aerospace applications.
  • Proficiency with standard welding tools, materials, and trade practices, including precision measuring instruments.
  • Understanding of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, brazing, arc-air procedures, and equipment for complex fabrications.
  • Familiarity with occupational hazards, safety precautions, and high-stakes environments such as launch sites.
  • Ability to pivot quickly between roles in a challenging, fast-paced setting.

Responsibilities

  • Execute welding assignments and procedures to construct and repair site structural stands, delivering high-quality results safely, professionally, and on time.
  • Cut, trim, or scarf metal objects and fit and fabricate components to precise dimensions for test-site structural forms.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and specifications under lead welder supervision, plan operations, address procedural gaps, and solve problems efficiently.
  • Operate hand welding and flame-cutting equipment to join metal components and assemble durable structural forms.
  • Visually inspect welds to AWS D1.1 and ASME B31.3 standards for normal and high-pressure service, with proper training.
  • Secure and maintain internal licenses, operator permits, or certifications as needed for safety and compliance.
  • Optimize operations by reducing turnaround times, streamlining processes, and collaborating across teams.
  • Adapt to shifting priorities and evolving program needs, and perform related duties as needed.
