About The Position

As a Structural Engineer Intern in Thornton Tomasetti’s Restoration & Renewal Practice, you will gain hands-on experience assessing, repairing, and rehabilitating existing buildings and structures. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on projects ranging from historic preservation to modern renovations, assisting with structural evaluations, documentation, and solution development. The internship offers an opportunity to learn practical approaches to complex renewal challenges and how engineers help extend the life and safety of buildings. This role is for Summer 2027.

Thornton Tomasetti’s Renewal practice provides structural, envelope, and building-systems services for existing properties of varied uses, ages, and construction types. Services include condition assessments, investigations, feasibility studies, peer reviews, repair and renovation design, and oversight of project execution in the field.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering.
• Strong academic record.
• Demonstrated interest in structural repair, renovation, or preservation.
• Curiosity, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn from experienced engineers.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, or structural analysis software.

Responsibilities

• Assist with field investigations, documenting structural conditions, and collecting data for analysis.
• Support evaluation of structural integrity, damage, and deterioration across a range of building types.
• Contribute to technical reports, drawings, and exhibits for internal and client use.
• Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and other team members to develop practical repair and rehabilitation solutions.
• Learn and apply industry standards, building codes, and best practices in structural renewal.
