Structural Analysis Engineer Level 2/3 - Multi-Body Dynamics - Dulles

Northrop Grumman•Dulles, VA
•$91,800 - $171,000•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector is hiring a Level 2 or Level 3 Structural Analysis Engineer specializing in Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) and kinematic simulation. Based in Dulles, VA or McLean, VA, this role is 100% onsite and does not accommodate telecommuting. The engineer reports to the MBD/Analysis Manager and joins a growing team performing system- and subsystem-level motion simulations for space vehicle operations and maneuvers. The work includes developing and executing detailed kinematic simulations of complex mechanical, mechatronic, and robotic systems. The engineer applies computational methods to interpret complex simulation and test data, co-simulates multiple computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools, and performs complex analyses. Strong programming and modeling skills are required. The position may involve maintaining and deploying engineering applications and computational resources, including specialized workstations and servers, for up to 10% of working hours. It may also involve testing prototypes and flight hardware and correlating simulation models with test results. Responsibilities include finite element analysis (FEA), including stress/strength, vibration, and loads and dynamics analyses. Regular commuting between the Dulles and McLean locations is required. The position follows a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off, and requires travel 10% of the time. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Top Secret security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required for positions requiring a government clearance. Relocation assistance may be available.

Requirements

  • Level 2: Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and 2 years of professional experience, or a master’s degree and 0 years of professional experience.
  • Level 3: Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and 5 years of professional experience, or a master’s degree and 3 years of professional experience, or a PhD and 1 year of professional experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Top Secret security clearance.
  • Demonstrated excellence in a space vehicle dynamics/kinematics field, such as structural design, stress analysis, materials, and/or vehicle dynamics.
  • Strong programming and modeling skills.
  • Strong understanding of computational methods and the ability to interpret complex simulation and test data.
  • Willingness to work 100% onsite and commute regularly between Dulles and McLean.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for positions with a government clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 or more years of space system simulation engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated success in leadership or management roles.
  • Experience with Simcenter 3D Motion, HEEDS MDO, and/or Amesim simulation tools.
  • Experience in controller modeling using Matlab/Simulink.

Responsibilities

  • Perform system- and subsystem-level motion simulations supporting space vehicle operations and maneuvers.
  • Develop and execute detailed kinematic simulations of complex mechanical, mechatronic, and robotic systems.
  • Process and generate reliable interpretations of complex simulation and test data.
  • Co-simulate multiple CAE tools to execute complex analyses.
  • Maintain and deploy engineering applications and computational resources, including specialized workstations and servers, as needed (up to 10% of working hours).
  • Potentially test prototypes and flight hardware and correlate simulation models with test results.
  • Perform FEA tasks, including stress/strength, vibration, and loads and dynamics analyses.
  • Commute regularly between the Dulles, VA and McLean, VA locations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
