Mechanical Design Engineer - Level 2/3 - Dulles
About The Position
Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector is hiring a Level 2 or Level 3 Mechanical Design Engineer for its East Engineering organization in Dulles, Virginia. The mid-level engineer will perform mechanical design tasks for one or more spacecraft systems or subsystems, working with designers and engineers across Spacecraft Structures, Subsystems, Mechanisms, MGSE, or Proposals. This role supports the development of technical capabilities across the company’s business areas. The position is 100% onsite and cannot accommodate telecommuting. The work schedule is 9/80, with every other Friday off, and travel is 10%. Relocation assistance may be available. The engineer will design spacecraft structures, mechanisms, and antenna and payload placements from concept through integration and test, based on customer requirements. Detailed design and documentation will be performed primarily with Creo Parametric CAD and other software tools, producing manufacturing-ready designs, mechanical drawings, and Model Based Designs using industry-standard GD&T processes. The role involves coordination with mechanical design and engineering teams to create efficient, manufacturable spacecraft parts and assemblies. At least 90% of the workday will involve detailed design tasks using Creo Parametric and other tools. Other duties may be assigned. The role may be filled at Level 2 or Level 3. Level 2 requires a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and two years of professional experience, or a master’s degree and no experience; additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Level 3 requires a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and five years of professional experience, a master’s degree and three years, or a Ph.D. and one year; additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Both levels require the ability to obtain and maintain the applicable U.S. Government security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required for positions requiring a government clearance.
Requirements
- For Level 2: Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and 2 years of professional experience, or a master’s degree and 0 years of experience; an additional 4+ years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- For Level 3: Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and 5 years of professional experience, or a master’s degree and 3 years, or a Ph.D. and 1 year; an additional 4+ years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance: Top Secret for Level 2 or Secret for Level 3.
- Experience performing mechanical tasks associated with the design and manufacturing of aerospace structures.
- Experience with Creo Parametric CAD, including skeletons, large assembly management, piping and harness modules, and drawing creation with GD&T.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with GD&T standards and preparation of manufacturing documentation.
- Experience with Model Based Designs, large assembly management, skeletons, piping and harness modules, 3D printing, design for manufacturing, and hands-on hardware fabrication.
- Experience with Blender or other animation software.
- Understanding of or passion for spacecraft layout and design.
- Training in PTC Creo and GD&T standards for preparation of manufacturing documentation.
Responsibilities
