About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps maintain customer service, merchandising, inventory, financial controls, safety, and compliance. The role involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment, as well as lifting up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally. Occasional ladder climbing and driving to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores may be required. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Occasional driving and ability to provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores.
Availability for some travel with limited overnight stays.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising by staging, stocking, and storing merchandise and ensuring appropriate presentation, signage, pricing, and use of fixtures.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond sensitively to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support employee development and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
