About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to support the development of an external candidate for the Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps lead customer service, merchandising, inventory and cash controls, staffing, store operations, and compliance. They may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and must complete work according to company policies, procedures, and deadlines. The role involves a fast-paced environment, some travel with limited overnight stays, and physical activity such as standing, stocking, unloading trucks, and lifting merchandise.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, and SAFE and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Ability to work with frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and merchandise handling.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally.
Ability to climb a ladder occasionally.
Ability to provide own transportation for occasional work-related driving.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of experience in a retail environment preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish ability may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, and storing merchandise, and ensure presentation, fixtures, signing, and pricing follow established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Assist in maintaining financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as required, including occasional driving to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
