About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and support recruiting, merchandising, inventory, customer service, store security, financial controls, and daily operations. The role requires some travel, with limited overnight stays. The position is based in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and applicants must be 21 or older.

Requirements

Must be 21 years of age or older.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash-register functions, including functions used to generate reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety-control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Ability to apply basic retail principles, including ordering cycles, peak inventories, and merchandise flow.
Ability to travel as required, including occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Frequent proper lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Support store merchandising by staging, stocking, and storing merchandise; presenting merchandise according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction; and properly using fixtures, signage, and pricing.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including those in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Support the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees, and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Provide continuous attention to staff development and interact tactfully and directly with employees.
