About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. This role is intended to support the interactive development of an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps maintain customer service, merchandising, inventory, financial controls, safety, and operational standards. The position involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, handling merchandise and equipment, and lifting. Some climbing and occasional driving are also required. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise, and may involve occasional exposure to outside weather conditions. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment, including hand-held scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers and carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Frequent proper lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional climbing using a ladder.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for work-related activities.
Some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of experience in a retail environment preferred for external candidates.
Some store locations may give preference to bilingual Spanish speakers.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including those in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited at the designated bank.
Assist in maintaining financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants.
Help ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive or provide own transportation to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
