About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps maintain customer service, store standards, financial integrity, safety, and compliance with company procedures. The role involves some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Ability to align motives, values, and beliefs with Dollar General values; support the development of others; interact tactfully and directly with employees; and respond sensitively to customer needs.
Ability to apply basic retail principles, such as ordering cycles, peak inventories, and merchandise flow.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling; frequent handling of merchandise and equipment; frequent lifting up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for job-related travel, including bank deposits, management meetings, and travel to other Dollar General stores.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and serve as a role model for following company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Support the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees, and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Occasionally drive or provide personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, or visits to other Dollar General stores.
