About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to foster the development of an external candidate for the Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps manage store operations, customer service, merchandising, inventory, financial controls, staffing, and compliance. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager's absence and helps maintain a clean, safe, well-stocked environment. The position involves some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including functions used to generate reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Ability to walk and stand frequently; bend, stoop, and kneel frequently; and lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally.
Ability to climb a ladder occasionally.
Ability to occasionally drive or provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and travel to other Dollar General stores.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Support merchandising by staging, stocking, and storing merchandise; ensure merchandise is presented according to established practices and the Store Manager's direction; and use fixtures, signs, and pricing appropriately.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited at the designated bank.
Support the store's financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager's absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores as needed.
