About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to support the development of an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps maintain store operations and customer service, supports team development and compliance with company procedures, and operates the store in the Store Manager’s absence. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise, occasional exposure to outside weather, and some travel with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Ability to frequently handle merchandise and equipment, including hand-held scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers, carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.
Ability to occasionally climb using a ladder.
Ability to occasionally drive or provide personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Ability to travel occasionally, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of experience in a retail environment preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise and using fixtures appropriately.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond sensitively to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
Support financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support employee development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
