About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and supports customer service, merchandising, financial controls, safety, compliance, and staff development. The role involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise, as well as occasional ladder climbing and driving. Some travel is required, with limited overnight stays. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions. The new-hire starting wage is $12.75–$18.00.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret documents such as diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional driving; provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores.
Some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience is preferred for external candidates.
Some store locations may give preference to bilingual Spanish speakers.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including those in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Support the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants.
Help ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
