About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate assists with recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory management, ordering, customer service, store opening and closing, cash and security controls, and maintaining a clean and safe store. They may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence, review operating statements for business trends and opportunities, and complete required paperwork and documentation. The role involves some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Frequent walking and standing; bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.
Willingness to travel, including limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist in recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and serve as a role model by following company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
Assist with store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support employee development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants.
Help ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as needed, including making bank deposits, attending management meetings, and visiting other Dollar General stores.
