About The Position
The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role provides interactive development for an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is intended to be held for a limited period. The position supports recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory management, ordering, customer service, store security and cash controls, and store cleanliness and safety. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and reviews operating statements to identify business trends and opportunities for expense control. The role requires regular driving in the employee’s own vehicle to attend meetings, visit other Dollar General stores, and make deposits. The work is performed in a fast-paced environment with a moderate noise level. It involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment; lifting up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally; and occasional climbing on a step ladder to heights of six feet. The position may involve exposure to outdoor weather, cleaning solutions, slippery floors, and extreme cold in freezers.
Requirements
- Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
- Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
- Ability to learn and perform cash register functions, including functions used to generate reports.
- Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
- Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices.
- Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
- Proficient interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
- Two or more years of experience in a leadership or managerial position.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to meet the physical demands described, including frequent handling and lifting of merchandise and equipment.
Nice To Haves
- High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
- Two or more years of experience in a retail grocery store is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
- Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, and proper use of fixtures, signing, and pricing.
- Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
- Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
- Provide customer service leadership.
- Model compliance with Company procedures and policies.
- Participate in store opening and closing activities.
- Ensure Company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
- Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
- Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
- Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
- Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
- Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
- Drive a personal vehicle to meetings, other Dollar General stores, and deposit locations.
