About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager with the effective implementation of store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps maintain customer service, store presentation, inventory, financial controls, safety, and compliance with company procedures. The position involves frequent physical activity in a fast-paced retail environment, occasional travel with limited overnight stays, and occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organization skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Ability to walk and stand frequently; bend, stoop, and kneel frequently; and handle merchandise and equipment frequently.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally; ability to climb a ladder occasionally.
Ability to occasionally drive or provide own transportation for work-related activities.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Must be able to accommodate some travel with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond sensitively to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Support the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain a clean, well-stocked, and safe store for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support employee development and collaboration, and act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as needed, with limited overnight stays, and occasionally drive or provide personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
