About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to support the interactive development of an external candidate for a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate assists with recruiting, staffing, merchandising, inventory management, ordering, customer service, store security, and financial controls. They participate in opening and closing activities, operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence, review operating statements to identify business trends and control opportunities, and complete required paperwork and documentation. The role involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment. It requires frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds, occasional ladder climbing, and occasional driving for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise, and may involve occasional exposure to outside weather. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
Ability to align motives, values, and beliefs with Dollar General values; support others’ potential; interact tactfully and directly with employees; and foster cooperation and collaboration.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds; ability to perform the physical activities described in the posting.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Ability to travel, including limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist in recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited at the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify trends in sales, labor, profitability, and inventory turn, as well as expense control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to fill store needs.
Help ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
