About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager with effective implementation of store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to foster the development of an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps oversee daily store operations and may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence. The role includes supporting recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory and ordering practices, customer service, store safety and cleanliness, cash controls, financial integrity, and timely completion of required paperwork. The candidate also reviews operating statements to identify business trends and opportunities for expense control.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret documents such as diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash-register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.

Ability to travel as required, including occasional overnight stays, and occasionally provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent.
One year of experience in a retail environment for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish skills may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, signing, pricing, and proper use of merchandise fixtures.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model company procedures and policies as outlined in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Assist in maintaining the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Support employee development, recruit and train qualified applicants, and ensure compliance with labor laws and company policies.
