About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate preparing for a Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The position may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and supports customer service, store operations, financial controls, merchandising, inventory, staffing, and employee development. It involves frequent physical activity, occasional driving for bank deposits and meetings, and some travel with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.
Ability to climb a ladder occasionally.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Ability to travel, including limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise in accordance with established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Support the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify trends and opportunities involving sales, labor, profitability, inventory turns, expenses, shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Foster cooperation and collaboration, maintain an open forum of exchange, and interact tactfully and directly with employees.
Support employee development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants.
Help ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
