About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps manage store operations and employees, supports customer service, merchandising, inventory, cash controls, store safety, and administrative requirements, and operates the store in the Store Manager’s absence. The position involves a fast-paced environment and some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Occasional travel is required, with limited overnight stays.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment, including hand-held scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers, carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional ladder climbing.
Occasional driving or provision of own transportation for work duties.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, pricing, signing, and presenting merchandise according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited in the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Help ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees, fostering cooperation and collaboration.
Occasionally drive or provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
