About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and general store needs. The position is intended to support the interactive development of an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps lead customer service and store operations, supports employees, and may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence. Responsibilities include recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory control, ordering, cash and facility controls, store opening and closing, financial review, and completing required documentation. The role involves frequent physical activity in a fast-paced, moderately noisy retail environment, occasional exposure to outdoor weather, and some travel with limited overnight stays. Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety controls, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling; frequent handling of merchandise and equipment; frequent lifting up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Some travel is required, with limited overnight stays.

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising by staging, stocking, and storing merchandise; ensuring presentation follows established practices and Store Manager direction; and properly using fixtures, signage, and pricing.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate company procedures and policies as a role model.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited in the designated bank.
Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Support employee development and ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
