About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store operations, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate pursuing a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and serves as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Some travel is required, with limited overnight stays.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising by staging, stocking, and storing merchandise and ensuring merchandise is presented, signed, and priced according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and preparing and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Support the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain a clean, well-stocked store and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and cooperation and ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies.
