About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps lead customer service and store operations, maintains merchandising and inventory standards, supports employee development and staffing, and may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence. The role also requires maintaining financial, safety, security, and documentation controls. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise, occasional exposure to outdoor weather, and some travel with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment, including handheld scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers, carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Frequent proper lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional climbing using a ladder.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
Ability to travel, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, and storing merchandise, ensuring proper presentation, fixtures, signage, and pricing.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends and opportunities or issues involving sales, labor, profitability, inventory turns, expenses, shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Foster cooperation and collaboration, communicate tactfully with employees, and maintain an open forum for exchange.
Provide continuous attention to staff development.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as needed, including occasional driving to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores.
