About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to foster the development of an external candidate for a Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps lead store operations and customer service, maintains merchandise and inventory standards, supports employee development and staffing, and may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence. The position involves frequent physical activity in a fast-paced retail environment, occasional driving for bank deposits and meetings, and some travel with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally.
Occasional climbing using a ladder.
Occasional driving; must provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and travel to other Dollar General stores.
Some travel is required, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storage, signing, and pricing merchandise in accordance with established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsive, sensitive service to customer needs.
Follow company procedures and policies as a role model.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Assist with store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and foster cooperation and collaboration among employees.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as required, including occasional driving for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
