About The Position

The Store Leadership Intern trains with an assigned mentor at a designated Hy-Vee store and gains hands-on experience across departments, including perishables, store operations, and human resources. The intern learns retail store functions such as merchandising, cash accountability procedures, food safety guidelines, and scheduling, and helps coordinate weekly promotions to achieve sales goals. The role offers an opportunity to apply relevant coursework in a real-world retail setting and develop foundational skills for a retail career. The intern provides customer service, supports management with store operations and profitability, assists with promotional displays and labor scheduling, replenishes products, works with cash registers, and helps in all areas of the store as needed. The position requires discretion when handling confidential business information and adherence to Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines. Employment is contingent upon successfully completing a pre-employment drug screen.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent experience.
A degree in an applicable field.
Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions in varied situations with limited standardization.
Ability to accurately perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Ability to interview to obtain basic information, guide and direct people clearly, and follow technical manuals.
Ability to work effectively with customers, employees, and store leadership in a fast-paced retail environment.
Ability to frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas.
Ability to perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning or sanitation duties.
Where applicable, ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation.
Where applicable, ability to work around heat- and burn-related hazards from cooking, baking, or grilling equipment.
Where applicable, ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards.
Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

Provide prompt, friendly customer service and make customer interactions positive.
Maintain a positive, friendly, accountable, and team-oriented atmosphere throughout the store.
Assist management in determining pricing and product blends for departmental profitability.
Assist with locating advertising and promotional displays and ensure product quality and quantities meet customer and store demands.
Assist in ensuring store standards for customer service, employee relations, and departmental profitability are met.
Use and understand the store's hardware and software technology.
Assist in forecasting and reviewing the store labor schedule within the Store Director's guidelines.
Replenish shelf products and design and construct displays.
Recommend merchandise additions, deletions, and shelf allocations for any department.
Work with cash registers and assist in all areas of the store as needed.
Handle confidential information, including pricing, sales reports, profit and loss reports, and wages, with discretion.
Adhere to Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines.
Report to work as scheduled and work the expected number of hours.
Train with an assigned mentor and gain experience across store departments, including perishables, store operations, and human resources.
Help coordinate weekly promotions to achieve sales goals.
