This role operates and maintains high‑pressure boilers, steam systems, chillers, HVAC equipment, and mechanical infrastructure across a 24/7 medical campus. Ensures safe, reliable plant performance in accordance with VA, ASME, NFPA, OSHA, and VHA Directive 1810 requirements.

Requirements

  • Valid City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License. Please include a copy with your submitted resume.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience with high‑pressure boilers and large‑scale HVAC systems.
  • Lift 50–75 lbs
  • Work at heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures.
  • Wear PPE including respirators, hearing protection, eye protection, and steel‑toe boots.
  • Ability to distinguish alarms, colors, and read gauges accurately.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain high‑pressure boilers (light‑off, warm‑up, shutdown, fuel switching, safety device testing).
  • Record hourly plant readings: pressures, temperatures, fuel flow, steam flow, condensate return, and equipment performance.
  • Maintain boiler and cooling tower water chemistry; perform blowdowns and mud drum maintenance.
  • Start, stop, and adjust HVAC, chilled water, and heating systems to maintain environmental conditions.
  • Conduct daily rounds of mechanical rooms, AHUs, chillers, exhaust systems, penthouses, and critical care areas.
  • Perform routine maintenance (filters, belts, lubrication, strainers) and minor repairs (valves, piping up to 6", motors up to 100 HP).
  • Respond to alarms and emergencies: low water, loss of feedwater/condensate, power loss, CO/combustible alarms, safety shutdowns.
  • Document all shift activities, equipment issues, safety device failures, and turnover notes.
  • Coordinate with VA Boiler Plant Supervisor and follow all safety, reporting, and operational procedures.
