About The Position

The Virginia Department of Health is hiring a State Office of Rural Health Director to manage and direct implementation of the State Office of Rural Health (SORH) activities in Virginia. Under the supervision of the Office of Health Equity Director, the incumbent will lead, manage, and oversee SORH programs and VDH rural health initiatives intended to improve health outcomes in rural Virginia. The SORH connects local healthcare systems with federal and state resources to address the distinct healthcare needs of rural and frontier communities. The position is restricted and funded solely by the State Office of Rural Health Grant and a required general fund match for a four-year-and-eight-month period ending June 30, 2031. Continued employment depends on ongoing funding availability, which is reviewed annually for non-general funds and periodically thereafter. The Director will lead VDH staff providing technical assistance to rural stakeholders working to reduce health disparities. The role directly supervises a SORH Manager and indirectly supervises staff managing the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility (Flex) and Small Rural Hospital Improvement Program (SHIP) programs and leading SORH external communications. The Director will lead cross-functional teams, coordinate with internal agency departments, work with the Office of the Secretary of Health and Human Resources on multiagency rural health strategies and initiatives, and represent VDH with internal and external stakeholders to develop and maintain partnerships that support positive program outcomes. The position is designated as requiring a Statement of Economic Interest disclosure, initially within 30 days of the start date and annually thereafter. Conflict of Interest training is also required within 30 days of assuming the position and annually thereafter. Employment is contingent on satisfactory background and other applicable checks. The Virginia Department of Health offers paid holidays, insurance, retirement plans, and leave.
