Standardized Patients (SPs) are recruited either to simulate medical scenarios or to teach students essential clinical skills. Both roles provide professional educational services to teach and assess health sciences learners. Mandatory training is required before scheduling. SPs who simulate medical scenarios portray cases realistically and accurately. They recall case information, complete checklists, and provide verbal feedback to learners. Students and faculty may physically examine SPs as part of the learning experience. SPs recruited to teach sessions instruct learners in clinical techniques, including history-taking, physical examination, communication, and empathy. Teaching SPs complete rigorous initial training and refresher training before sessions, provide step-by-step instruction, and give constructive feedback. They use their bodies as teaching tools. SP work is supervised by the SP Educator, Administrative Manager, Operations Manager, and Director of Simulation & Clinical Skills. Work hours vary according to course schedules. SPs may work a maximum of 58 hours per pay period and are requested to work a minimum of 25 hours per pay period, subject to course needs.
